Chaplin Cinema or Elphinstone Picture Palace is the first cinema in India established in 1907 by Jamsetji Ramji Madan in Calcutta. Chaplin Cinema is the oldest single screen cinema in Kolkata, West Bengal. It was located at 5/1 Chowringhee Place. In 1907, Jamsetji Ram Ji Madan opened this cinema hall in India. But with the passage of time, the type of movies and cinema halls changed.

The first cinema hall was built in 1907

In 1907, Jamsetji Ramji Madan established the Elphinstone Picture Palace. Uttam Kumar’s father operated the projector in this theatre. Later it was renamed as Minerva Cinema. The cinema theater was in a dilapidated condition before it was renamed and renamed Chaplin by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation in the 1980s. The theater was demolished by the Municipal Corporation in 2013 after many years of non-operation.

The cinema hall was known as Elphinstone Picture Palace

Everyone has probably seen it while visiting Esplanade Kolkata, known as Elphinstone Picture Palace and later known as Chaplin Cinema. It was established in 1907 by Jamsetji Ram Ji Madan, a popular venue for bio-scopes and theatres.

Later many more cinema halls were built.

Later, in 1911, it was established in Mumbai under the name Royal Theatre. Whereas the Regal Cinema of Delhi was built in 1932 at Connaught Place. In 1913 the first Indian owned theater ‘Gayeti’ was established in Madras.

The popularity of Indian films can be estimated from the fact that a total of 1,600 films are produced here in all languages ‚Äč‚Äčevery year.

Later replaced by PVR and INOX

In the beginning silent films were made and then gradually came the era of talking films and then began the era of changing form of cinema and cinema hall. Earlier films were shown as dramas, then they were shown. Gradually the situation changed and the producers proved it by increasing the capacity of people in theatre. The theater began to have great potential. Then PVR and INOX took place from the cinema hall. Ticket prices have also become a number.
